Learning DisabilitiesLearning disabilities manifest themselves in the main academic areas of reading, writing, and mathematics.  They often have a genetic basis and underlying brain differences.  Learning disabilities are common and are not the fault of the individual or the family and fortunately may be treated by a variety of educational interventions.  Common signs and symptoms of learning disabilities include:

  • Often spelling the same word differently in a single document
  • Trouble filling out applications or forms
  • Problems with test-taking
  • Memory difficulties
  • Longer time to process information
  • Difficulty with abstract concepts
  • Inattention to details or excessive focus on them
  • Frequent misreading of information
  • Resistance to reading or writing tasks
  • Difficulty understanding directions
  • Poor organization skills

At New York Psychotherapy and Neuropsychology Group (NYPNG), a learning disability is diagnosed after a comprehensive psycho-educational assessment, which shows a particular pattern of results between cognitive and academic testing.  A diagnosis of a learning disability is only made after ruling out other potential explanations for academic difficulties including hearing or visual impairment or lack of appropriate educational instruction.

If a learning disability is diagnosed, students will need specialized instruction and accommodations.

Services may be provided within and outside of the school setting. Individuals with learning disabilities may still progress to higher education and careers. Accommodations may be available to these individuals in college and in taking major exams such as the SAT, GRE, and MCAT. At NYPNG, we are highly skilled in both diagnosis of learning disabilities and advocating for services and accommodations at all levels of education.
