Group TherapyEach of us exists within group environments – our families, schools, organized activities, or work. These are the environments in which we grow and develop as human beings. Group psychotherapy is no different. It provides a place where you come together with others to share problems or concerns to better understand your situation, vent, and to learn from and with each other.

Group therapy is a process through which a small group of people (generally six to ten) meet face-to-face, under the guidance of a professionally trained therapist, share and explore their feelings and behaviors, hear different points of view and coping strategies, and receive encouragement from others facing similar issues.  Within the group setting, one can address feelings of isolation, depression and anxiety, toxic and co-dependent relationships, grief/bereavement, anger, depression or anxiety, and childhood or adult trauma.

Under the direction of the group therapist, members have the opportunity to discover how they think and why they react internally the way that they do, and how they operate and are perceived by others in the group.  Members talk about what goes on in their lives outside the group but also focus in a concentrated way of what happens between members in the here-and-now of the group’s life, providing each other feedback and learning through witnessing and relating to each other.

These groups are currently forming at NYPNG.  Please contact us today for more information and to join a group.

MEN ARE NOT UNFEELING ROBOTS

It’s utter nonsense when you hear that men navigate life and relationships void of emotions! Men experience the same breadth and depth of emotions as the opposite sex. Here’s the difference: women use words to process their feelings, often getting stuck in emotions without reaching resolution. Men state their feelings and use words to achieve resolution. Sadly, when men do express their emotions or step into vulnerability, society takes away their “manhood/masculinity card” = mixed signals. The result? Confused men who are  forced to adhere to cultural and traditional masculine norms, often minimizing and rendering a man’s suffering invisible.

Behind the mask of masculinity, are many men struggling with mental health problems, such as depression, trauma, toxic relationships, unmanageable stress/anxiety, and addiction. The powerful role of gender and mental illness stigma are often immovable barriers that stop men from deviating from the “gender script” and seeking the support they need.

This men’s talk group focuses on (1) using male-based narratives to understand and identify areas of conflict or stress that fuel unhealthy relationships and other life difficulties, (2) letting go of toxic, abusive, and co-dependent relationship, (3) training group members to problem solve difficult situations and effectively cope with negative feelings in a different way, and (4) and working through through depression, infidelity, anxiety, and  trauma.

Ink to Paper: Narrative Writing Group for Trauma Survivors
“Writing is a very sturdy ladder out of the pit.” (Alice Walker)

In this expressive writing paradigm, group members will write about traumatic, stressful or emotional events. Participants are encouraged to explore the thoughts and emotions surrounding the event. The benefit in creating a story that links together emotional memories, feelings of pain, grief, and loss to an event have scientifically proven to improve both physical and emotional health. No feedback is given on writing. You do not have to be an experience writer and no critique is given on writing. The only requirement is a desire to heal your emotional wounds and discover strength, power, wisdom, depth, energy, and creativity.
