Director of Psychological Assessment 

Dr. Yurkewicz is considered a leader in the area of psychological treatment and evaluations of childhood disorders, autism, attention deficit disorders, and learning disabilities.  Dr. Yurkewicz provides cognitive and behavioral therapies for childhood-onset disorders, depression, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, and life transitions.  He also conducts assessments to determine the presence and course of dementing conditions (e.g., Alzheimer’s Disease, vascular dementia) in adults.

Dr. Yurkewicz has given numerous talks, presentations, and conducted research published in peer-reviewed journals.  His research has focused on the relationships of various “positive” variables of psychology such as hope, self-control, and gratitude on relevant outcomes such as academic achievement, peer relationships, and leadership characteristics.  His research has provided evidence for a growing subspeciality of psychology that focuses on strengths of individuals.  Dr. Yurkewicz has presented on such topics as the assessment of autism, behavioral strategies for the treatment of ADHD, and the effectiveness of disciplinary procedures in school settings for children with special needs.

Dr. Yurkewicz received his Doctorate in School Psychology from St. John’s University.  He completed post-doctoral training working with children, adolescents, young, and adults diagnosed with autism and other developmental disabilities.  He has received post-doctoral training in clinical neuropsychology.  Dr. Yurkewicz has also worked in private and public school settings, day treatment, clinic, and inpatient settings.

Dr. Yurkewicz was a school psychologist for students with autism and other developmental disabilities in Long Island.  Additionally, he held a private practice in Long Island and provided consultations on treatment plans and differential diagnoses for various state-funded agencies.  Dr. Yurkewicz has served as an adjunct professor at Dowling College and St. John’s University for undergraduate and graduate level students.  Dr. Yurkewicz is currently the Assistant Head of Psychological Assessment for YAI-National Institute for People with Disabilities.
